Dr. Kenneth Sabacinski, a board-certified, Harvard-trained physician, co-founded SanMelix Laboratories, the parent company of BeeCure with his wife, Diana. The company was created with a mission forged from his real-world medical practice and Diana’s own experience with highly sensitive skin.
Dr. Sabacinski’s journey—from a competitive athlete to pathology, and finally, to a pioneering Doctor of Podiatry—gave him a unique vantage point to combine scientific rigor at the cellular level with the power of nature. His quest to find a consistent, effective, natural solution led him toward an unlikely source: buckwheat honey.
A Foundation in Clinical Excellence
Dr. Sabacinski’s medical path began at Quinnipiac University, where he met his wife and co-founder, Diana, who, in his words, "helped straighten me out." He went on to complete a two-year Physician Assistant program in Pathology, receiving rigorous training that provided a foundational understanding of disease processes at the cellular level. This path led him to a PA in Pathology at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia.
Inspired by a friend and encouraged by professors, Dr. Sabacinski shifted his focus, attending podiatry school in Philadelphia and later completing his internship and residency training through Harvard Medical School affiliates, including Beth Israel Deaconess and Joslin Diabetes Clinic, and Brigham and Women’s hospitals. It was during this specialized orthopedic training that he gained extensive experience in treating the devastating complications of diabetes, particularly non-healing foot wounds.
In the early years of his practice, he often found himself frustrated by the limitations of traditional wound-care treatments. Silver dressings, diluted iodine, and other commonly used approaches were inconsistent. There was no universal solution, and for too many patients the tragic outcome was amputation. This led him on a search for an alternative and he made it his life’s goal to find a better way, realizing that to truly heal these complex wounds, a completely new approach was necessary.
The Sweet Discovery: Unlocking Buckwheat Honey's Power
Dr. Sabacinski’s search for a consistent treatment led him to research the medicinal properties of honey, which had been gaining traction with studies on Manuka honey from New Zealand. However, he quickly observed that Manuka honey did not provide the consistent results he needed in all cases. He hypothesized that this inconsistency was due to a lack of standardization in the natural product itself.
His focus soon shifted to buckwheat honey after encountering research that demonstrated its superior composition. Buckwheat honey is naturally higher in polyphenols and anti-inflammatory properties than many other types of honey, including Manuka honey. He realized that a formulated medical dressing could leverage these natural benefits, but only if the active components were standardized.
In the early 2000s, Dr. Sabacinski and his team developed a specific, patented formulation that standardized the levels of Methylglyoxal (MGO) and other key beneficial compounds in buckwheat honey. This consistency proved critical; the standardized buckwheat honey dressing outperformed Manuka honey in internal testing, leading to six patents for wound care products.
Saving Limbs: The Clinical "Home Run"
The true test of the product came under the FDA’s “Right to Try” program. Dr. Sabacinski selected a cohort of 28 to 30 severely ill diabetic patients, all of whom were facing imminent leg amputation due to their unrelenting ulcers. The treatment began with daily application of the buckwheat honey dressing, which was eventually reduced to every other day.
The results were astonishing: a 100% success rate in saving the limbs of patients who were expected to lose them. One particularly poignant case involved a patient who had already lost one leg and developed a severe ulcer on the other. After 8 to 10 months of consistent application, the ulcer completely healed, saving the patient’s remaining leg—a clear validation that the buckwheat honey formulation could be a true “home run” in wound care.
The team presented their findings to the FDA, conducting pig trials that showed wounds healing significantly faster than expected, and lab tests proving the dressing killed bacteria for at least 72 hours—a feature highly beneficial for military use.
The Pivot: Nature’s Solution for Skin Barrier Health
Unfortunately, the FDA landscape changed dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. After initially indicating they would approve the product, they changed their mind, requiring new tests, that were much more extensive and expensive than initially required, effectively halting the medical device approval process for the wound dressing. To keep the company alive, Dr. Sabacinski and Diana pivoted their focus from medical device wound care to consumer skincare.
The transition made perfect sense. Given the product's success in healing compromised skin and severe burns—including those from radiation therapy—the co-founders realized the same powerful properties could benefit the skin barrier on a daily basis. And Diana’s own experience with highly sensitive skin made her very aware of the importance of natural, effective ingredients in skin care products.
Medically, the benefits are rooted in chemistry. Buckwheat honey has a high concentration of flavonoids, which act as potent antioxidants. This component is crucial for reducing inflammation and protecting against free radical damage, which Dr. Sabacinski refers to as "preventing the rusting of the tissues." Furthermore, unlike traditional petroleum-based products that create a surface barrier, BeeCure penetrates the skin, providing deep, restorative nourishment and reducing chronic inflammation to promote healing.
Today, BeeCure builds on Dr. Sabacinski’s foundational insight, offering products that are clinically proven to strengthen, protect, and repair the skin barrier. Dr. Sabacinski remains the company’s Chief Medical Officer, and along with Diana, helps ensure that every product under consideration adheres to the company’s mission to remain rooted in combining the best of nature and science to drive innovative solutions for patient health and healing.
